Vietnam is emerging as a bright spot in the global semiconductor supply chain , with a market size that could reach 7 billion USD by 2028. This is the opinion of many delegates at the Vietnam Semiconductor Industry Exhibition 2024 (SEMIExpo Viet Nam 2024) which has just opened. The event is chaired by the Ministry of Planning and Investment, organized by the National Innovation Center (NIC) in collaboration with the Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI).

These are circuit boards containing semiconductor chips manufactured by an American corporation. The boards can be used in military radars or in computer hard drives. This is one of many products on display at the Vietnam Semiconductor Industry Exhibition 2024.

Held for the first time in Vietnam, SEMIExpo Viet Nam 2024 has attracted the participation of more than 100 booths from major technology partners in the semiconductor field, along with localities, research institutes, universities, investment funds, businesses, and associations. To continue promoting this industry, the Ministry of Planning and Investment has assigned the National Innovation Center NIC to coordinate with the US Department of State and Arizona State University to launch and implement the program in Vietnam, with the goal of training more than 4,000 microchip packaging and testing engineers from now until 2025. At the same time, actively cooperate with the United States, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan (China), Europe, etc. to jointly train human resources and develop the semiconductor and artificial intelligence industry.

Vietnam is facing the opportunity to participate deeply in the semiconductor industry.

Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung, Deputy Head of the National Steering Committee for Semiconductor Industry Development, affirmed that the Vietnam Semiconductor Industry Exhibition 2024 is an event marking an important step forward for Vietnam in its efforts to participate in the global value chain of the semiconductor industry, a field considered the “heart” of modern technology and the foundation for the digital economy.

According to the Minister, the event will be a platform connecting Vietnamese enterprises as well as the semiconductor business community so that we can cooperate more widely, go further together, making Vietnam an important link in the global semiconductor supply chain, contributing to sustainable development and common prosperity, creating a solid momentum for Vietnam to enter a new era, an era of national growth as General Secretary To Lam pointed out.

Mr. KC Ang, Chairman of SEMI’s Southeast Asia Advisory Council, President of Asia, Global Foundries, affirmed the growing role of Vietnam in the semiconductor industry supply chain. According to SEMI, the size of Vietnam’s semiconductor market has reached 18.23 billion USD in 2024, achieving a compound growth rate of 11.48% over the past years.

“It can be said that Vietnam is facing the opportunity to participate deeply in the semiconductor industry and has clearly shown its desire to become a link in the global semiconductor supply chain,” said Chairman KC Ang.
