SEMI Southeast Asia President: Vietnam is well positioned to develop semiconductor ecosystem

Sharing at SEMIExpo 2024, the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Global Semiconductor Association (SEMI) Southeast Asia region said that Vietnam is in a good position to develop a semiconductor ecosystem, from design, assembly, testing to packaging...

On November 7, the Vietnam Semiconductor Industry Exhibition 2024 (SEMIExpo Viet Nam 2024) with the theme “Elevating Vietnam in the global semiconductor supply chain” officially opened at the National Innovation Center (NIC) Hoa Lac campus.

This is the first and largest international semiconductor exhibition held in Vietnam, chaired by the Ministry of Planning and Investment and assigned to NIC to coordinate with the Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) for two days, November 7-8.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of SEMIExpo Viet Nam 2024, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung affirmed that the Vietnam Semiconductor Industry Exhibition 2024 is an event marking an important step forward for Vietnam in its efforts to participate in the global value chain of the semiconductor industry, a field considered the “heart” of modern technology and the foundation for the digital economy.

According to Minister Nguyen Chi Dung, in the context of the strong development of the fourth industrial revolution, the semiconductor industry is not only the foundation of modern technology, but more than that, it is also the core factor that determines the strength of the digital economy, determining the development of breakthrough technology industries, from artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), big data to automation.

Minister of Planning and Investment shared at the opening ceremony of the exhibition.

In addition, complex developments in global geopolitics have prompted countries to diversify their supply chains and seek more stable and sustainable sources of components.

“Vietnam, with its great advantage of being a country with stable politics, continuously good economic growth for many years, and a young, abundant workforce with a passion for innovation, is a promising destination for investors in the semiconductor sector,” said Minister Nguyen Chi Dung.

Recognizing this opportunity, the Government has issued the Semiconductor Industry Development Strategy to 2030 and Vision to 2050, with the goal of making Vietnam a global semiconductor human resource center by 2030 and a global semiconductor and electronics industry center by 2040.

Vietnam’s goal is not only to participate in the global value chain, but also to build an advanced and attractive semiconductor industrial ecosystem in the region and the world, helping Vietnam become self-reliant and develop sustainably in this field.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment, SEMI and domestic and foreign organizations and enterprises pressed the button to open the SEMIExpo 2024 Exhibition.

Along with that, recently, the Ministry of Planning and Investment has proactively implemented the Semiconductor Human Resource Development Program, closely coordinating with the Ministry of Education and Training and relevant agencies, large semiconductor enterprises such as Cadence, Synosyps, Qorvo, Siemens, Marvell, ARM, Samsung…

Therefore, according to Minister Nguyen Chi Dung, Vietnam is facing the opportunity to deeply participate in the semiconductor industry and has clearly demonstrated its desire to become a link in the global semiconductor supply chain.

Appreciating Vietnam’s recent moves, Mr. KC Ang, President of Global Foundries Asia and also Chairman of SEMI Southeast Asia Advisory Board, said that the Vietnamese Government has shown a strong commitment to promoting the semiconductor industry by setting out a clear vision, goals and roadmap until 2050.

In particular, Mr. KC Ang highly appreciated Vietnam’s strategic position in the supply chain with the advantage of being close to the Chinese market and shipping routes connecting to Europe and North America, an abundant young labor force with competitive labor costs and many foreign enterprises operating in Vietnam…

“Vietnam is well positioned to assert its position in the global semiconductor supply chain from integrated circuit design, assembly, testing to packaging,” said Mr. KC Ang, adding that “With strong support from the Government and key industry leaders, Vietnam has the potential to become a dynamic innovation hub and play an important role in the global supply chain.”

According to Mr. KC Ang, SEMI Expo is a testament to Vietnam’s efforts in developing a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem as well as demonstrating reforms to make Vietnam a good development model in the semiconductor industry.
